How to choose the right surf bag

1. Why a board bag is essential

A board bag is not just an accessory; it is your board's main protection.
It helps you to:

  • Protect your board during transport (car, plane, etc.)

  • Protect it from the sun and heat

  • Prevent dents and scratches during storage

  • Keep your board clean and dry

A well-protected board = more durable, better-looking, better resale value.

2. Different types of board bags

Bag type

Protection

Recommended use

Advantages

Disadvantages

Sock bag

Light

Daily use, short trips

Lightweight, space-saving

Little impact protection

Lightweight bag / day bag

 Medium

Car transport, storage

Protection against sun and minor impacts

Too thin for travel

Travel bag

Very high

Plane, long trips

Thick foam, pockets, straps, often with wheels

Heavy and bulky

Having two board bags is often ideal: a sock for everyday use, and a travel bag for trips.

3. Choosing the right size

Simple rule: your board bag should be slightly larger than your board.

Board type

Recommended bag size

Shortboard 5’8 – 6’4

+ 5 to 10 cm

Fish 5’10 – 6’8

+ 5 to 10 cm

Funboard / Egg 7’0 – 8’0

+ 10 to 15 cm

Longboard 9’0 – 10’0

+ 10 to 20 cm

If you’re traveling, allow extra space for a towel, wetsuit, or leash.

4. Thickness and materials

🔹 Thickness

  • 3 mm: lightweight bag / daily use.

  • 5 mm: standard day bag.

  • 8–10 mm: travel bag (high protection).

🔹 Materials

  • Silver nylon / polyester → protects from sun and heat.

  • PE foam → absorbs shocks.

  • Silver / aluminized interior → "anti-heat" effect.

If you leave your board in a car, choose a silver board bag: it reflects heat.

5. Important details to check

Element

Why it's important

Sturdy zipper

Must be anti-corrosion (salt + sand = danger)

Reinforcement at nose and tail

The most fragile parts of the board

Padded handles / shoulder strap

For easy transport

Ventilation

Prevents condensation and bad odors

Pockets

For leash, wax, keys, wetsuit, etc.

Internal straps

Keep the board securely in place (for travel bags)

A good board bag is also a matter of daily convenience.

6. Special advice for plane travel

If you're traveling for a surf trip, choose a reinforced travel bag:

  • Minimum 8 mm thickness, ideally 10 mm,

  • Reinforcements at the nose and tail,

  • Internal straps,

  • Space for multiple boards (double / triple bag),

  • "Fragile" label required on luggage.

Tip: wrap your board in a towel and your poncho inside the bag for extra protection.

7. Care and lifespan

✅ Rinse your board bag with fresh water after trips (especially plane or beach trips).
✅ Do not leave it in the sun all day.
✅ Let it dry open if it got damp.
✅ Check the zipper and lubricate it with a special product (or candle wax).
✅ Store it flat or hanging, not folded.

A good board bag can last 5 to 10 years if you take care of it.
