Choosing Your Paddle Board (SUP) Paddle
Glisse Budget Tip
“Your paddle is your engine.
Choose one that is light, suited to your height and style, so that every stroke is a pleasure, not an effort.”
1. The role of the paddle
The paddle is your board's engine.
It directly influences:
-
Your speed,
-
Your balance,
-
And your paddling comfort.
A good paddle, well-adjusted and suited to your style, completely changes the feeling on the water.
2. The ideal length
General rule:
The paddle should be between 15 and 25 cm longer than your height.
|
Type of practice |
Recommended paddle length |
|
Touring / All-around |
Height + 20 cm |
|
Surf |
Height + 15 cm |
|
Race |
Height + 25 cm |
|
Yoga / Relaxation |
Height + 10 cm |
A paddle that is too long will tire your shoulders, too short will reduce power.
3. Shaft material
|
Material |
Advantages |
Disadvantages |
|
Aluminum |
Strong, inexpensive |
Heavy, fatigues faster |
|
Fiberglass |
Good weight/price compromise |
Less rigid |
|
Carbon |
Ultra-light, high performance |
More expensive, fragile to impacts |
|
Wood |
Natural look, comfort |
Less rigid, heavier |
For beginners, fiberglass is ideal. For regular riders, carbon makes a difference.
4. The blade (the part that enters the water)
Blade size:
-
Large blade → more power, ideal for strong riders or racing.
-
Small blade → faster cadence, less effort, ideal for touring and surfing.
Blade shape:
-
Tear drop → powerful, good control.
-
Rectangular → smoother, more consistent.
The surface area of the blade influences the power of each stroke.
5. Paddle type
|
Type |
Description |
Usage |
|
Fixed (one-piece) |
Light, rigid, high performance |
Race / surf |
|
Adjustable (vario) |
Adjustable length |
All-around, family |
|
2 or 3 pieces |
Dismantles for transport |
Inflatables, travel |
Adjustable paddles are perfect for sharing your board or adapting to different practices.
6. Handle and comfort
-
T-handle → good control, ideal for performance.
-
Rounded handle (ergonomic) → more comfortable for long tours.
-
Non-slip grip on the shaft → prevents blisters and improves grip.
Always test the grip: the paddle should naturally extend your arm.
7. Maintenance
✅ Rinse with fresh water after each session.
✅ Check the tightening systems (for adjustable paddles).
✅ Store away from sun and sand.
✅ Avoid impacts to the blade (especially carbon).
Good maintenance keeps the paddle performing well and extends its lifespan.
