How to choose your Kitesurf bar and lines

Budget Kiting Tip

“Your bar and lines are your controls: take them seriously.
Properly set up, they will allow you to kite safely and with pleasure for a long time.”

1. Why choose your bar and lines carefully?

The bar and lines are your kite’s controls.
A good choice allows for:

  • Precise and secure traction,

  • Total control of the kite’s power,

  • Safety in case of stall or emergency,

  • Better technical progression.

A poorly adapted bar = poor power management and quick fatigue.

3. Choosing the right bar size

  • Bar width should match kite size and rider level.

  • General guideline:

Kite size

40–45 cm

7–10 m²

45–50 cm

10–13 m²

50–55 cm

>13 m²

55–60 cm

Wider bar = better power and control in light winds.
Shorter bar = more reactive and precise for freestyle.

Standard 4 lines

22–24 m

Versatile, freestyle and freeride

Long lines 5th line

27–30 m

Lightwind or foil

5th line

For safety system

Rapid depower, complete release of pull

Lines must be even, untwisted, and aligned before each session.

5. Safety systems

  • Quick release: releases chicken loop and kite instantly

  • 5th line: complete depower of the kite

  • Depower: adjusts power without releasing the bar

Safety always starts with a well-adjusted bar and a functional quick release.

6. Materials and comfort

  • Bar: Lightweight aluminum or composite fiber

  • Handles: Ergonomic and non-slip grip

  • Lines: Braided Dyneema or Spectra, resistant to wear and UV

Good grip and flexible yet strong lines make all the difference.

7. Maintenance and checks

✅ Rinse bar and lines with fresh water after each session
✅ Check line condition (wear, knots, twists)
✅ Inspect quick release and chicken loop regularly
✅ Do not leave lines lying in the sun or on the sand

Regular maintenance extends the life of your equipment and guarantees safety.
