How to choose your wakeboard vest
Budget Sliding Tip
“A good vest is one you no longer feel once you're on the water.
It protects, accompanies your movement, and becomes your best ally to progress without limits.”
1. Why a vest is essential
A wakeboard vest is not just about safety — it's also about comfort and performance.
It protects you in case of a fall, helps you float, and cushions impacts on the water.
Even experienced riders never go out without a vest. It's the foundation of responsible riding.
2. The two main types of vests
|
Vest Type |
Description |
Recommended Use |
|
Impact Vest |
Light, flexible, designed to cushion impacts |
Cable park, freestyle, boat wake (not 50N approved) |
|
Buoyancy Vest (50N) |
Approved, provides minimum buoyancy |
Beginners, schools, boat riding (mandatory in some spots) |
An impact vest is more comfortable but less buoyant. A 50N vest is safer but a bit more rigid.
3. The right fit
A good vest should be:
✅ Adjusted but not too tight – it shouldn't ride up when you fall into the water.
✅ Snug against the body – no space between your torso and the vest.
✅ Easy to put on – front or side zip depending on your comfort.
Try it on with your wetsuit: the thickness can change the ideal size.
4. Size and cut
-
Men's / Women's / Children's: choose a cut adapted to your body shape.
-
Slim fit (snug): better freedom of movement for tricks.
-
Regular fit (classic): more comfortable for freeriding or learning.
Vests that are too loose limit mobility and risk riding up during falls.
5. Materials
|
Material |
Advantage |
|
Neoprene |
Comfort, elasticity, warmth, premium look |
|
Nylon / PVC |
Lightness, affordable price, quick drying |
|
Segmented foam |
Freedom of movement, shock absorption |
Neoprene remains the top choice for comfort and durability.
6. Details not to overlook

|
Boat wakeboarding |
Impact vest or 50N buoyancy vest depending on regulations |
|
Cable park |
Neoprene impact vest, flexible and lightweight |

Beginner / School |
50N approved vest for maximum safety |
Always check the spot's rules — some require a 50N vest.
8. Maintenance
✅ Rinse with fresh water after each session
✅ Dry in the shade, with the zip open
✅ Never wring to dry
✅ Check the condition of seams and fasteners
✅ Store flat, away from direct sunlight
Good maintenance = several seasons without loss of buoyancy.
