How to choose your neoprene booties

Budget Surf Tip

“Well-protected feet make all the difference on the water.
Proper booties = comfort, warmth, and better grip on your board.”

1. Why choose your booties carefully?

Neoprene booties are essential for:

  • Protecting feet from cold and chilly water

  • Preventing injuries (rocks, shells, coral)

  • Improving grip on the board

  • Protecting toes and heels from chafing and blisters

Even in moderately cold water, well-fitting booties increase comfort and safety.

2. Types of Booties

Type

Description

Recommended Use

Short (2–3 mm)

Low around the ankle

Warm water >20°C, light surfing or paddleboarding

Medium (4–5 mm)

Mid-ankle

Water 15–20°C, surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing

Tall / Boot (5–7 mm)

Extends up to the calf

Cold water <15°C, long sessions

Split Toe

Big toe separation

Better board grip, barefoot-like feel

Flat Toe (Classic)

Standard shape

Versatile, easy to put on

The type mainly depends on water temperature and desired comfort.

3. Size and Fit

  • Booties should fit snugly without compressing the foot.

  • Too small → restricted circulation, painful feet

  • Too large → water entry, slipping on the board

Check for:

  • Secure heel

  • Comfortable toes

  • Freedom to wiggle toes slightly

Always try on booties with neoprene socks if you plan to wear them.

4. Materials

  • Flexible neoprene: comfort and thermal insulation

  • Rubber / EVA sole: grip and protection against stones

  • Heel and toe reinforcements: durability and protection

  • Stretch zones: better freedom of movement

Look for a good balance between flexibility and durability.

5. Thickness and Temperature

Water Temperature

Recommended Thickness

Type

>20°C

2–3 mm

Short, light

15–20°C

4–5 mm

Mid-ankle

<15°C

5–7 mm

Boot or split toe

<10°C

If you get cold easily, choose a thicker option.

6. Booty Care

✅ Rinse with fresh water after each session
✅ Let dry flat in the shade
✅ Do not expose directly to sunlight
✅ Store flat or hanging, avoid forced folds
✅ Check sole and seams before each session

Regular maintenance extends lifespan and maintains comfort.
