Choosing your Wing Foil accessories wisely

Budget Foiling Tip

“In wing foiling, safety and comfort go hand in hand.
The right accessories allow you to ride more freely, longer — and progress with confidence.”

1. Why accessories are essential

In wing foiling, accessories are not an “extra” — they are what guarantee your safety, comfort and progression.
When chosen well, they allow you to ride longer, with confidence and in better conditions.

Every detail counts when you're gliding above the water.

2. The impact vest (or buoyancy aid)

Role:

  • Protects the torso, ribs and back during falls.

  • Provides additional buoyancy (useful when you're starting out).

Enhanced buoyancy vest (50N)

Safety + comfort

Beginners or deep water riders

A good vest doesn't restrict arm movement or harness belt.

3. The helmet

Why:

The foil is rigid and sharp equipment: a shock can be dangerous.
The helmet protects against:

  • Mast or board impacts

  • Impacts during high-speed falls

Helmet choice:

  • Certified for water / kite / wake

  • Light and ventilated

  • Adjustable (dial or internal foam)

  • Good ear coverage without blocking hearing

Never ride without a helmet, especially when learning or in gusty winds.

4. Neoprene booties

Role:

  • Protect feet from cold, cuts (rocks, shells, foil).

  • Offer a better grip on the board.

Choose according to season:

Water temperature

Recommended thickness

>20°C

2 mm

15–20°C

3 mm

<15°C

5 mm

Check the sole: thin for feel, thick for comfort.

5. The leash (board and wing)

Importance:

Prevents losing your board or wing after a fall, especially in strong winds.

Very comfortable

A coiled leash prevents it from dragging in the water — great for comfort and safety.

6. The harness (optional but practical)

Why:

  • Allows you to attach the wing with a harness hook, to relieve arm fatigue.

  • Ideal for long sessions or strong winds.

Strong lower back support

Long sessions / strong winds

Choose a light harness that is compatible with the wing leash.

7. Technical apparel

  • Neoprene wetsuit: thermal protection and comfort.

  • Anti-UV Lycra: essential in summer.

  • Windbreaker jacket: useful between sessions.

  • Neoprene gloves: to keep warm and maintain grip.

Adapt your attire to the water temperature, not the air temperature.

8. Protections and useful extras

  • Waterproof sunscreen SPF 50+

  • Safety cord for glasses or camera

  • Dry bag for phone, keys, tools

  • Changing poncho for comfortable changing

These small accessories make all the difference for comfort before and after a session.

9. Maintenance and safety

✅ Rinse your equipment with fresh water after each session.
✅ Check the condition of leashes, carabiners, and Velcro.
✅ Let it dry in the shade and avoid direct sunlight.
✅ Check your wing's pressure before each outing.

Well-maintained gear = more durable, safer, and better performance.
