Choosing the right Snowboard Bindings

Budget Glide Advice

“Your binding is the translator of your style.
Choose it precise if you want to dominate the slope, soft if you want to feel it.”

1. Why bindings are essential

Bindings are the link between your body and your board.
They transmit every movement, every pressure, and directly influence your comfort, control, and safety.

Good bindings transform your board — bad ones can ruin everything.

2. Types of bindings

Binding Type

Description

Recommended Use

Strap-in (classic)

2 straps (foot and ankle) to be manually tightened

Versatile, reliable, most common

Rear-entry (Flow)

Rear opening for quick foot entry

Practical, ideal for beginners

Step-on (Burton / BOA)

Strap-less system, direct engagement

High-end comfort, speed, more expensive

Strap-in bindings offer the best balance of performance and precision.

3. Binding flex

Flex

Description

Riding Style

Soft (1–4)

Comfort, forgiveness, mobility

Beginner / Freestyle

Medium (5–7)

Versatile, good compromise

All-Mountain

Stiff (8–10)

Precision, speed, responsiveness

Freeride / Carving

Make sure the binding flex matches your board's flex.

4. Binding size

Bindings are chosen based on your shoe size and board width:

Shoe Size (EU)

Binding Size

36 – 40

Small

40 – 44

Medium

44 and up

Large

Bindings that are too large create play, too small hinder foot support.

5. Baseplate type

Type

Main Advantage

Plastic / Nylon

Lightness, flexibility, comfort

Composite / Fiberglass

Better energy transmission

Aluminum

Ultra stiff and precise (freeride, carving)

For an all-around rider, composite remains the best compromise.

6. Highback (back support)

This is the rear part of the binding, which supports your calf.

Height

Use

Low / Soft

Freestyle, freedom of movement

Medium

Versatile, all-mountain

High / Stiff

Freeride, speed, maximum support

A well-adjusted highback should hug your calf without creating pressure.

7. Angle adjustment

Riding Style

Recommended Adjustment

Beginner

+15° front / 0° back

Freestyle / Switch

+12° / -12° (symmetrical)

Freeride

+18° / -6°

Carving

+21° / +6°

Experiment with several positions — a slight rotation of the highback can improve your comfort and control.

8. Compatibility with your board

Always check the mounting system:

System

Main Brand

Feature

4x4 / 2x4

Universal

Most common

The Channel

Burton

Requires compatible discs

3D

Burton (older models)

Increasingly rare

Make sure the supplied discs fit your snowboard correctly.

9. Maintenance

✅ Check screw tightness before each session
✅ Clean straps and buckles after snow / salt
✅ Check comfort foams (no excessive wear)
✅ Store in a dry place

Well-maintained bindings = longer lifespan and safety on the snow.
