Choosing the right wakeboard helmet
Glisse Budget Advice
"Your helmet is your bubble of confidence.
Lightweight, snug, and well-ventilated — you quickly forget it, but it won't forget you when you need it."
1. Why wear a helmet when wakeboarding?
A wakeboard helmet is an essential safety item , often underestimated. It protects the head against:
-
High-speed impacts on the water
-
Impacts with the board or obstacles (rails, kickers)
-
Accidental collisions in cable parks or boats.
A good helmet is like a seatbelt: you don't think about it... until it saves your life.
2. Different types of helmets
|
Helmet type |
Description |
Recommended use |
|
Hard shell helmet (ABS) |
Hard shell, very resistant |
Cable park, intense riding |
|
Soft helmet (EVA / foam) |
Lightweight, good comfort |
Beginners, occasional riders |
|
Multi-impact helmet |
Hard shell + shock-absorbing foam |
Experienced riders, jumps and obstacles |
Hard shell helmets are more durable and offer better long-term protection.
3. Proper fit
A well-adjusted helmet should:
✅ Be snug but not painful
✅ Remain stable without moving even without the strap
✅ Come down 2 cm above the eyebrows
✅ Have the chin strap properly adjusted (you should be able to fit one finger between your chin and the strap).
Try on your helmet with your balaclava or lycra if you ride in cold water, as this can affect the size.

7. Maintenance
✅ Rinse with fresh water after each session
✅ Air dry, away from direct sunlight
✅ Clean the inside with a damp cloth or soft foam
✅ Regularly check straps and buckles
✅ Replace after a violent impact or after 3-4 seasons
A damaged helmet no longer provides effective protection, even if the shell appears intact.
