Choosing the Right Lycra/Rashguard

Budget Glide Tip

“Lycra is your first shield against sun and chafing.
Light, comfortable and protective, it turns every session into pleasure without irritation or burns.”

1. Why wear a Lycra?

Lycra, also called rashguard, is a thin and stretchy garment worn under a wetsuit or alone:

  • Sun protection: blocks UV rays (UPF 50+ depending on model)

  • Protection against chafing: prevents irritation from leash, harness or wax

  • Warmth retention: lightweight but retains some warmth in the water

  • Comfort and mobility: stretchy fabric that follows all movements

Even in summer, a Lycra is highly recommended for all sessions.

2. Types of Lycra / Rashguard

Type

Description

Recommended Use

Compression / Performance

Very fitted fabric

Muscle support, control sensations, competition

To start, a versatile long-sleeve Lycra covers most conditions.

3. Size and fit

  • Should hug the body without restricting movement.

  • Too small → discomfort, chafing

  • Too large → floats in water and does not protect properly

Check:

  • Shoulders and arms: freedom of movement

  • Torso and stomach: comfortable fit

  • Length: covers the torso and lower back well

You can wear your Lycra alone in warm water, or under your wetsuit for added comfort.

4. Materials

  • Thin neoprene / Classic Lycra: lightweight, breathable

  • Polyester + Spandex: elastic, quick-drying, durable

  • UPF 50+ fabric: maximum sun protection

  • Anti-bacterial / quick-drying: reduces odors and keeps skin dry

A good Lycra dries quickly, is soft on the skin and provides effective protection.

5. Color and visibility

  • Bright / fluorescent colors → better visibility on the water, safety

  • Dark colors → less staining, more discreet

  • For kiting, surfing or paddleboarding: prioritize visibility if you ride in busy spots

6. Maintenance

✅ Rinse with fresh water after each session
✅ Hand wash in cold or lukewarm water
✅ Do not use fabric softener
✅ Dry in the shade, flat
✅ Store folded or hung, avoid direct light

A well-maintained Lycra remains stretchy and protects for a long time.
