Choosing the right snowboard accessories

Ski Budget Advice

“Accessories are not a luxury — they are your comfort and safety guarantee.
A quality mask is better than a stylish new t-shirt.

1. Why accessories are essential

Accessories are not mere "extras":
they guarantee your comfort, safety, and performance on the snow.
A good mask, appropriate gloves, or a well-chosen helmet can make all the difference in your riding day.

Well-equipped = more fun, fewer hassles.

2. The helmet

Why:

  • Protects from impacts and cold.

  • Essential for freestyle and freeride.

How to choose:

- Adjusted size: the helmet should be snug without being uncomfortable.
- Ventilation: opt for models with adjustable vents.
- Compatibility: check that it fits your goggles and your head size.
- Weight: the lighter it is, the faster you forget you're wearing it.

A CE EN1077 certified helmet is a guarantee of safety.

3. The mask (or goggle)

Role:

Protection against wind, snow, and especially UV rays.

To choose according to:

Condition

Lens type

Strong sun / high mountains

Dark lens (cat. 3 or 4)

Variable weather

Photochromic lens

Fog / night

Clear lens (cat. 1)

Double-lens and anti-fog masks ensure clear vision all day long.

4. Gloves or mittens

Types:

Type

Advantage

Gloves

Precision, flexibility, breathability

Mittens

Maximum warmth, but less dexterity

Glove liners

Perfect for very cold weather or under lightweight gloves

Tip:

  • Prefer a waterproof membrane (Gore-Tex, Dryride, etc.).

  • Check for palm and finger reinforcements for durability.

  • Long cuff = better protection against snow.

Warm hands = more energy to ride.

5. Balaclava, neck gaiter, and beanie

Why:

  • Protect from cold, wind, and snowfall.

  • Essential during stormy days.

Types:

  • Fleece neck gaiter: warm and breathable.

  • Full balaclava: ideal under a helmet.

  • Beanie: for breaks or mild days.

Mix style and comfort — your look matters on the snow too!

6. Technical socks

  • Avoid cotton → retains moisture.

  • Choose breathable, tall, and compressive socks.

  • Models with reinforced areas at the shin and heel = guaranteed comfort.

A good pair of socks can save your feet on a full day.

7. Protections

Equipment

Use

Back protector

Protects the spine in case of a hard fall

Protection shorts

Padded at the tailbone and hips

Wrist guards

Recommended for beginners

Knee pads

Useful for freestyle and street

Lightweight and discreet, these protections do not hinder your movements.

8. The riding backpack

To prioritize:

  • Light, compact, and ergonomic.

  • Comfortable straps + chest strap.

  • Compartments for shovel, probe, water bottle, or hydration pack.

  • Waist belt for stability.

Some models even integrate a back protector — great for freeride.

9. Sunscreen & lip balm

Yes, even in winter!
UV rays reflect off the snow and burn the skin very quickly.
→ SPF 30 minimum, water-resistant.
→ Apply before each session, especially on the nose and lips.

Cold and sun are the worst enemies of an unprotected face.
