Choosing the right neoprene gloves

Budget Surf Tip

“Well-protected hands make all the difference.
Proper gloves = warmth, comfort, and better grip on the water, even in winter.”

1. Why choose your gloves carefully?

Neoprene gloves are essential for:

  • Protecting hands from cold and wind

  • Maintaining mobility and sensitivity to hold the bar or board

  • Preventing frostbite and chafing

  • Improving comfort during long sessions

Even in cool water, suitable gloves extend session duration and protect your hands.

2. Types of gloves

Type

Description

Recommended Use

Short gloves (2–3 mm)

Short finger sleeves

Water >18°C, light surf or kite

Medium gloves (3–4 mm)

Full fingers

Water 15–18°C, versatile

Long / thick gloves (5 mm)

Full fingers and reinforced palm

Water 10–15°C, long sessions and winter

Split finger / 3-finger gloves

Separates thumb and index finger

Better grip on bar or paddle

Non-slip palm gloves

Rubber reinforcement

Kite, windsurf and paddle

The type depends on water temperature and the precision required for the sport.

3. Size and fit

  • Gloves should fit snugly without compressing or hindering movement.

  • Too small → restricted circulation, heat loss

  • Too large → water entry, slipping and loss of sensitivity

Check:

  • Palm and fingers are well-fitted

  • Freedom to move fingers slightly

  • Good wrist seal to prevent water entry

Gloves should remain comfortable while retaining warmth.

4. Materials

  • Flexible neoprene: insulation and comfort

  • Rubber / silicone palm: adhesion and grip

  • Finger reinforcements: wear resistance and better durability

  • Stretch zones: freedom of movement

Seek a compromise between flexibility and thermal protection.

5. Thickness and temperature

Water Temperature

Recommended Thickness

Type

>18°C

2–3 mm

Short, flexible gloves

15–18°C

3–4 mm

Full gloves

10–15°C

5 mm

Thick gloves, mild winter

<10°C

5–7 mm + hood and booties

Very cold water

If you get cold easily or for long sessions, choose a thicker option.

6. Glove care

✅ Rinse with fresh water after each session
✅ Dry flat in the shade
✅ Do not expose to sunlight
✅ Store flat or hanging
✅ Check seams and reinforcements regularly

Regular maintenance extends lifespan and maintains warmth and flexibility.
