Choosing the right neoprene balaclava
Budget Board Sports Tip
“The head and neck lose a lot of heat: a good hood transforms a cold session into an enjoyable one.
Well-fitting and insulating, it is essential to enjoy the water all year round.”
1. Why choose your hood carefully?
A neoprene hood is essential for:
-
Protecting the head and neck from the cold
-
Limiting body heat loss
-
Preventing frostbite and discomfort
-
Improving concentration and performance during winter sessions
Even a thick wetsuit is not always enough: the head loses a lot of heat if it is not protected.
2. Types of hoods
|
Type |
Description |
Recommended Use |
|
Thin (2–3 mm) |
Lightweight neoprene, windproof |
Water >15°C, short sessions |
|
Standard (4 mm) |
Full protection, good insulation |
Water 10–15°C, versatile |
|
Thick (5 mm and +) |
Reinforced areas, high thermal comfort |
Water <10°C, long sessions |
|
Integrated hood / hooded |
Attached part of the wetsuit |
Comfort, maximum watertightness, harsh winter |
|
Split face hood |
Face cut-out for visibility |
Surf, kite and foil, optimal visibility |
Choose the right thickness and cut according to the temperature and duration of sessions.
3. Size and fit
-
The hood should hug the head without compressing or hindering breathing.
-
Too small → discomfort and limited circulation
-
Too large → water ingress and heat loss
Check:
-
Fit around the face and neck
-
Freedom of head movement
-
Good compatibility with helmet or integrated hood
A well-fitting hood is key to retaining warmth and freedom of movement.
4. Materials
-
Flexible neoprene: comfort and thermal insulation
-
Fleece / softskin lining: extra warmth and softness
-
Chin and nape reinforcements: resistance and comfort
-
Stretch zones: freedom of movement and ergonomic fit
Opt for flexible yet insulating neoprene to avoid restricting mobility.
5. Thickness and temperature
|
Water temperature |
Recommended thickness |
Type |
|
>15°C |
2–3 mm |
Thin, light hood |
|
10–15°C |
4 mm |
Standard protection |
|
<10°C |
5 mm and + |

If you are sensitive to cold or for long sessions, choose a thicker hood.
6. Hood care
✅ Rinse with fresh water after each session
✅ Dry in the shade
✅ Do not expose directly to sunlight
✅ Store flat or hung, avoid forced creases
✅ Check seams and reinforcements regularly
Good maintenance extends life and maintains warmth and flexibility.
